Past Members of TRACE Lab

  • Emma Geffros

Emma is currently in her fourth year of Environmental and Resource Science. She has previously obtained a diploma in Ecosystem Management. Emma will be working with TRACE Lab as a placement student for the Winter 2025 semester.

  • James Prange-Groulx

James completed his fourth year of the Water Science BSc program at Trent University. He worked in TRACE Lab as a co-op student, supporting and learning alongside other undergraduate students as they progressed through their experiments.

  • Mallory Christenson

Mallory completed her fourth year of the Forensic Science BSc program at Trent University. For her thesis, she studied PFAS and microplastics in muscle and stomach tissue of fish at different trophic levels, exploring whether the two substances may act as co-contaminants. She planned to pursue further studies in forensic or environmental toxicology.

  • Chloe Lauer

Chloe completed her undergraduate degree in Environmental Chemistry at Trent University. In TRACE Lab, she contributed to the mussel watch project in collaboration with Fathom Five National Marine Park (FFNMP) and completed her thesis on antidepressants found in caged mussels downstream from wastewater treatment plants in Windsor, Ontario.

  • Matthew Banuelos

Matthew completed his fourth year of Environmental Chemistry at Trent University. His research focused on the distribution of per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) in Walleye from Lake Erie, with the goal of providing more information to fish consumers about their exposure to PFAS through fish consumption.

  • Alexander Bewsh

Alexander completed a Master of Instrumental Chemical Analysis at Trent University after earning an Honours Bachelor of Science in Forensic Science. His research focused on developing extraction methods and analyzing organic and inorganic analytes using mass spectrometry techniques. He gained extensive experience with ICP-MS, MP-AES, GC-MS, and LC-MS/MS instrumentation.

  • Renata Veraszto

Reni completed a Master of Science in Forensic Science at Trent University. Her research focused on detecting PFAS in fish tissue and soil samples and developing standard operating procedures based on EPA methods. She combined principles of forensic science and toxicology to investigate environmental contamination and its impacts on ecosystems and human health.

  • Leah Harrington

Leah completed a Master of Science in Forensic Science at Trent University. Her research focused on the legacy of environmental contaminants in Peterborough through soil sampling to assess whether pollutants from industrial areas remain present and pose risks to the environment and local communities. Her interests span forensic and environmental toxicology.

  • Ruby Wetzl

Ruby completed a Master of Science in the Environmental and Life Sciences program at Trent University after earning a BSc in Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems. Her research focused on how agricultural management influences the enrichment of trace metals and rare earth elements in soils. She also maintained a strong interest in seed saving and genetic diversity.
